The High Tatras

The Vysoké Tatry, or High Tatras, is the most beautiful mountain range in Eastern Europe. There are many villages crammed among these mountains, as well as pristine lakes and glistening streams. Beautiful meadows are everywhere, and you'll want to pull a Julie Andrews and pretend you're in The Sound of Music. Go ahead and enjoy this spectacular region!

My brother, Kevin, hiking in the High Tatras WHAT TO SEE AND DO: Chances are you'll start your trek at Stary Smokovec. From here you can take a funicular train to Hrebienok, or hoof it if you don't mind another hour's hike. We hiked to Zamkovskénho Chata, spent the night, and then hiked to Skalnaté Pleso, a stunning glacial lake. Skalnaté Pleso, a glacial lake, High Tatras

WHAT NOT TO DO: General precautions taken before you hike apply. Don't plan on partying once you're on your trek; the chalet where we stayed closed up the restaurant, rolled out beds, and ordered us to retire for the night at 10:00!

WHERE TO EAT: Most of the hotels and chalets have restaurants; the food is generally the same. There is a supermarket in Stary Smokovec.

WHERE TO STAY: Hotels and pensions are everywhere. Satur (phone 25-65) at Stary Smokovec can help you with accommodation. Camping isn't permitted in the High Tatras, but the chalets (chata) are very comfortable and serve good country food. The trick is whether they have room during the busy summer months: call ahead.
