Hong-do

My friends, Mary and Janet, Hong-do, Korea Hong-do, a spectacular little island off the coast of southwest Korea, is a wonderful place to visit for a weekend. There isn't much to do, but the rock formations that jut out of the water are well worth the trip. Take a train down to Mok-p'o, a sleepy port in SW Korea. From there you can take a hydrofoil to Il-gu, the larger village on Hong-do.

WHAT TO SEE: The rock formations. That's basically all there is to see. You can take a boat cruise that'll take you around the rocks that surround Hong-do. If you wish, you could brave the trail to the northern and smaller village, I-gu. The walk, on a narrow trail, should take about an hour.

Sunrise, Hong-do, Korea WHAT TO DO: Relax. That's about all you can do, other than gaze at the rocks. Take a stroll out at night and you'll remember what stars look like.

Rock formations, Hong-do, Korea WHAT NOT TO DO: Be sure you don't stay too near the center of town. Small as it is, you'll be kept awake by the few nightclubs and karaoke bars that clutter this wonderful island. Don't go if you think the weather may be bad, because chances are you may get stuck there!

WHERE TO EAT: Well, the choices are few. If you're a picky eater, you'd better bring your own food. The food is expensive. Be sure you know what you'll have to pay up before you order. The dried squid, if you can stomach it, is actually better than what you'd buy at a Seoul food stall since it's all fresh. Stands selling ramen noodles are here and there. There is a fried chicken place on one of the back streets if you can find it.

WHERE TO STAY: You don't have many choices. I stayed at a min-bak that was on the edge of town. If you can call this a town. I had a small room that cost me 15,000 won, and it was nice and quiet.
